Welcome Back The Original Revolution

Almost 10 years before DeFi Summer 2020 introduced us to utility ERC20 tokens… One man manifested the utility  of Bitcoin…

What is AmericanKingpin?

The Silk Road

The Silk Road marketplace launched in February 2011 as an online black market that operated on the Tor network, allowing users to buy and sell goods. primarily illicit drugs using Bitcoin for anonymity. It was one of the first major darknet markets, emphasizing privacy and libertarian principles of free trade. The site was founded by Ross Ulbricht, who operated under the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts, until the FBI shut it down in October 2013 and arrested him.

The Take Down

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, was arrested on October 1, 2013, at the Glen Park Branch Library in San Francisco, California. FBI agents lured him into an area with public Wi-Fi and waited for him to log into the Silk Road admin panel. To prevent him from encrypting his laptop, agents staged a distraction and grabbed his device while it was still unlocked. Simultaneously, the FBI seized Silk Road’s servers, effectively shutting down the marketplace.

The Trial of DPR

In 2015, Prosecutors in New York presented evidence linking Ulbricht to the Dread Pirate Roberts, the pseudonymous operator of Silk Road, including chat logs, emails, and Bitcoin transactions. In February of rge same year, a jury convicted Ross on all charges, including conspiracy to commit money laundering, computer hacking, and drug trafficking. In May 2015, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a ruling that many viewed as excessively harsh, fueling ongoing debates about government overreach and digital freedom.

The Release

In January 2025 US President Donald “Based” Trump signed a full and unconditional pardon for Ross Ulbricht. Trump championed Ulbricht’s cause, joining libertarians who said the conviction was an example of government overreach. “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponisation of government against me,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social site on Tuesday. “He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!”
